These apps split into two groups. Wondering and Socrati build courses from a topic or your material and add audio and spaced review. StudyFetch, Mindgrasp and YouLearn are study tools. They take lecture material and turn it into notes, flashcards and quizzes for an exam. Learnfold sits with the course builders, but it has no audio lessons outside its Studio plan and no review schedule, and leans instead on questions about the page and a course that branches into linked pages. All of them use AI, and AI makes mistakes.

Everything said about the other apps here comes from their App Store listings on October 31, 2026, including the version notes on those listings. A feature missing from a listing may still exist in the app, so "not listed" below means only that.

## What each listing says

**Wondering** (listed as "Wondering - Learn Anything", subtitle "Personalized Visual Lessons") is the closest to Learnfold. Its listing says you can "enter a topic, paste a link, upload a PDF, or describe your learning goal and background," and get a roadmap of lessons. Its feature list names Course Podcasts, Interactive Exercises with "multiple question types," Knowledge Cards and Friend Streaks. Recent version notes add Live Tutor, which can "turn any lesson into a live, podcast-style conversation," Canvas, "a visual way to explore ideas in parallel" where you branch into connected topics, and Global Review, which uses spaced repetition across your courses. The listing names iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision.

**Socrati: AI Course Creator** (subtitle "AI tutor, PDF & YouTube study") says you can "pick any topic or upload your own materials," naming "PDFs, YouTube videos, photos of notes." It pitches each lesson at 5 to 10 minutes. Practice includes flashcards, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and matching, with "smart review scheduling," and any lesson can become "a podcast-style audio lecture." The listing says it is designed for iPhone.

**StudyFetch: AI Tutor** describes "flashcards, quizzes, and detailed notes generated from anything you upload," including lectures, PDFs, slides and videos. It lists real-time lecture recording that transcribes class into notes, Sparky, "a voice-to-voice AI tutor," and "progress tracking that shows what you have down and what needs more focus."

**Mindgrasp** says it works from "documents, textbooks, articles, and video/audio lectures," and that you can drag, drop or paste a link to begin. It produces notes, summaries, flashcards, quizzes and answers. Its version 2.14 release notes say AI notes for PDFs show the page numbers the material came from, and notes for video and audio show the time range. The listing says a subscription is required to use its features.

**YouLearn: AI Study Tutor** (subtitle "PDFs, lectures & quizzes") says you can "upload PDFs, lecture slides, videos, recordings, photos, or text." It turns them into notes, flashcards, quizzes, podcasts and an AI tutor, and says you can listen "while commuting, walking, or offline." The listing says it is "available on web and mobile."

## Where Learnfold differs

Three things set Learnfold apart from the apps above, at least going by what their listings say.

**You can ask about the page you are reading.** Ask about a whole page in your own words, or select a passage and ask Why, How or for an example. Those discussions are saved and can be reopened, and some answers become pages of their own. The page on [an AI tutor you can question](/use-cases/ai-tutor-you-can-question/) shows how that works.

**The course grows from each lesson.** Every lesson ends with "Where next?": Go deeper, Go sideways, Zoom out, or your own question. Your pick becomes a new page linked to the lesson it came from. Wondering's Canvas does something similar. Learnfold adds a course map with a "You are here" marker and the open threads you have not finished.

**You see a plan first.** Before any lesson is written, Learnfold shows a course plan, and you approve it or start again. The page on the [AI course generator for iPhone](/use-cases/ai-course-generator-iphone/) shows the first few minutes.

Prices are the in-app purchases each listing names as monthly, on the US App Store, on October 31, 2026. They change often, so check the listing before you buy. Learnfold's plans are monthly App Store subscriptions, listed at [learnfold.app/#pricing](https://learnfold.app/#pricing).

## Who should pick another app

Each of them does something Learnfold does not.

- **Wondering, if you want to listen and review.** Live Tutor and course podcasts cover your commute, and Global Review schedules spaced repetition across every course. It also starts from a link or PDF, so it covers much of the same ground as Learnfold, with more audio.
- **Socrati, if you want flashcards inside the course.** Flashcards, matching and fill-in-the-blank exercises with review scheduling, attached to short lessons, suit someone who wants to remember as well as understand.
- **StudyFetch, if you are a student with lectures.** Record a class, get notes, then drill flashcards and quizzes. That is exam prep, and it is what the app is built around.
- **Mindgrasp, if you need to trace notes to the source.** Page numbers for PDFs and time ranges for video make it easier to check a note against the original.
- **YouLearn, if your material is scattered.** Combining slides, recordings and photos into one place, with web access as well as the phone, suits a semester of mixed material.

If spaced repetition matters most, a dedicated flashcard app is also worth a look. The [Learnfold vs flashcard apps](/compare/learnfold-vs-flashcard-apps/) page covers Anki and Quizlet.

## Who Learnfold suits

Learnfold suits people who are learning because they are curious, or because they need to understand something properly, more than people cramming from lecture notes. It works from a question with no material behind it, such as how noise-cancelling headphones work, as well as from a single PDF or link. For a document-led course, the guide on [turning a PDF into a course](/guides/turn-a-pdf-into-a-course/) works with any of these apps.

It suits you if you tend to get stuck on one sentence and want to ask about it on the spot, and if your questions wander and you want each detour kept as a page you can find again.

Learnfold has no flashcards or spaced repetition, and no certificate or accreditation. It uses AI to write explanations, and AI makes mistakes, so treat it as a tutor and check important facts against a reliable source.

On privacy, every option sends your material somewhere. With Learnfold Cloud, Learnfold's own AI, your prompts and sources go to Learnfold's cloud service and an AI model provider, as the [privacy page](https://learnfold.app/privacy) explains. With Codex, they go to OpenAI or the compatible service you connect. With Hermes, they go to whichever model your Hermes agent runs. In each case, check that provider's terms. A starter practice course can be read without paying, and no account is needed.

## Pairing a course app with a study app

Most people will settle on one course app, but pairing across types works well. Learn a topic in Learnfold, then use a study app such as StudyFetch or Socrati, or a flashcard app, to drill what you need to remember. Or keep your lecture material in Mindgrasp or YouLearn for exam prep, and use Learnfold for the side questions the lectures raised. If your main need is studying from a stack of your own documents, also read [Learnfold vs NotebookLM, now Gemini Notebook](/compare/learnfold-vs-notebooklm/).

## Quick answers

**Which iPhone apps turn a topic or PDF into a course?**

As of October 2026, the App Store listings for Wondering, Socrati and Learnfold all describe building lessons from a topic or your own material. StudyFetch, Mindgrasp and YouLearn focus on turning your material into notes, flashcards and quizzes rather than a course.

**Which AI course app has spaced repetition?**

Wondering's listing describes a Global Review that uses spaced repetition, and Socrati's describes smart review scheduling. Learnfold has no flashcards or spaced repetition. It has optional checks at the end of a page and practice pages after missed answers.

**Which AI tutor app has audio lessons?**

Wondering lists course podcasts and Live Tutor, which turns a lesson into a podcast-style conversation. Socrati lists podcast-style audio lectures, StudyFetch lists a voice-to-voice tutor and YouLearn lists podcasts. Learnfold's Studio plan includes Build in motion, which turns a lesson into a narrated whiteboard video you can pause to ask questions.

**Is branching into related topics unique to Learnfold?**

No. Wondering's Canvas also lets you branch into connected topics. Learnfold's version is the Where next? choice at the end of every lesson, which writes a new linked page, plus a course map with open threads.

**Do these apps make mistakes?**

Any app that writes lessons with AI can make mistakes, Learnfold included. Treat AI lessons as a tutor rather than a textbook and check important facts against a reliable source.
