Learnfold vs ChatGPT for learning

ChatGPT's study mode, quizzes and flashcards next to an app built only for courses, including who should just keep using ChatGPT.

If your question fits in one evening, ChatGPT's study mode is probably all you need, and you may already be paying for it. Learnfold is for questions that keep going. It turns a question, link, PDF or photo into a course of short pages, shows you the plan before writing anything, and grows a new linked page each time you pick where to go next. Both write with AI, and AI makes mistakes.

ChatGPT is a general assistant with a study mode built in. Learnfold is an iPhone and iPad app that builds and grows courses and does nothing else. How big your question is decides most of this.

What ChatGPT offers learners in 2026

OpenAI's help page describes study mode as a way to work toward understanding instead of being handed an answer. It asks questions, explains ideas in layers and checks your understanding with quizzes or practice questions, and it can work from notes, slides or a photo of a problem you upload. When it launched in July 2025, TechCrunch reported it was open to logged-in users on the Free, Plus, Pro and Team plans. OpenAI has added and renamed plans since then, so the current list is on ChatGPT's pricing page.

OpenAI's release notes describe two additions this year. Interactive quizzes inside the conversation arrived on August 14, 2026, and interactive flashcards on September 22, 2026. According to the flashcards help page, you can ask for cards on a topic or upload notes, flip them, mark each as known or needing practice, and find them later in your ChatGPT library. That page does not describe a spaced-repetition schedule.

So "it can quiz me" no longer counts as a reason to pick a separate app.

How a Learnfold course is built

Three parts of Learnfold matter in this comparison.

A plan before any writing. Start from a topic, a link, a PDF, notes, Markdown or a photo, and Learnfold shows a course plan. Nothing is written until you approve it. If the plan misses what you came for, you start again with a sharper question instead of finding out ten messages later.

Pages instead of a thread. Lessons are short pages, written section by section so you can start reading early. Each one ends with "Where next?": Go deeper, Go sideways, Zoom out, or your own question. Your pick becomes a new page linked to the one it came from, so a side question gets its own page and stays out of the main line.

A map you come back to. The course map shows every page you opened with a "You are here" marker, plus open threads you have not finished. Continue drops you on the exact spot you left, and courses can sync across your devices through iCloud.

When to stay in ChatGPT

For a lot of people ChatGPT is the right answer.

  • You need help with one problem tonight. A confusing paragraph, or a formula you half remember. Turning on study mode and asking is quicker than building a course.
  • You already pay for ChatGPT. A second subscription only makes sense if you will use the course structure. If you mostly ask one-off questions, stay where you are.
  • You want flashcards. ChatGPT makes them on request and keeps them in a library. Learnfold has no flashcards and no spaced repetition.
  • You want it on the web or Android. OpenAI's help page describes study mode on web, iOS and Android. Learnfold is an iPhone and iPad app.
  • You already do everything else in ChatGPT. If it holds your work drafts and your trip plans, studying there saves switching.
  • You like a blank chat. Some people find a plan and a map get in the way. If you learn best by letting a conversation wander, a chat suits you better.

When a question outgrows a chat

Say you want to understand how GPS works, or you have a 40-page PDF from work to get through. In a chat, the explanation, your follow-ups and the quiz all scroll past in one thread, and finding last Tuesday's good answer means scrolling or searching. In Learnfold they land as separate pages on the map, and the page you were reading is where Continue puts you.

Steering is the other reason. The "Where next?" choices at the end of each page make it easy to chase a side question without losing the main line, which the page on following your curiosity down a rabbit hole covers. And if one sentence loses you, you can select it and ask Why, How or for an example, which the page on an AI tutor you can question walks through.

Learnfold uses AI to write its explanations, and AI makes mistakes, so treat it as a tutor and check important facts against a reliable source. The guide on checking AI explanations for mistakes has a routine for that. Learnfold also gives no certificate or accreditation, so a course will not count toward a qualification.

Plans are monthly App Store subscriptions, listed at learnfold.app/#pricing. A starter practice course can be read without paying, and there is no account to create.

Splitting the work between them

Plenty of people will use both, and the split comes easily.

  • Ask ChatGPT the quick one-off question. When the question keeps growing and you want to come back to it next week, start a Learnfold course on it.
  • Learn a topic in Learnfold, then ask ChatGPT for a deck of flashcards on the same topic to drill the vocabulary.
  • If you have an OpenAI API key, Learnfold can run on Codex, OpenAI's agent, instead of Learnfold Cloud. OpenAI charges for that use separately, and your prompts and sources go to OpenAI, so check its terms.

If you are weighing other options, there are similar pages on NotebookLM, now called Gemini Notebook, and on flashcard apps such as Anki and Quizlet.

Quick answers

Is ChatGPT study mode good enough for learning a new subject?

For many people, yes. OpenAI's help page describes study mode as asking questions, explaining ideas in layers and checking your understanding, and it was offered on the free plan from its July 2025 launch. If you want the material organised into a course of pages you can come back to, a course app such as Learnfold is built for that instead.

Can ChatGPT make quizzes and flashcards now?

Yes. OpenAI's release notes describe interactive quizzes inside the conversation from August 14, 2026 and interactive flashcards from September 22, 2026. Its flashcards help page describes marking each card as known or needing practice, with cards saved to your ChatGPT library.

Does Learnfold have flashcards?

No. Learnfold has optional checks at the end of a page, such as multiple choice, a written answer or a guided discussion, and practice pages that help you revisit lessons after missed answers. If you want flashcards, use ChatGPT, Anki or Quizlet alongside it.

Can Learnfold use OpenAI's models?

Learnfold can connect to Codex, OpenAI's agent, using your own OpenAI API key, and OpenAI charges you separately for that use. Your material then goes to OpenAI, so check its terms. Learnfold also has its own AI service, Learnfold Cloud, that needs no setup, account or key.

Which one makes fewer mistakes?

Do not trust either blindly. Both write explanations with AI, and AI makes mistakes. Treat either one as a tutor rather than a textbook, and check anything important against a reliable source.
