# A self-paced learning path that you steer

> You approve the plan, you choose where it goes next, and you come back when you have time. Nobody is waiting on you.

You want to learn something on your own schedule, which in practice means twenty minutes on a Tuesday and then nothing until Sunday. A fixed online course assumes you'll keep up. Learnfold gives you a course plan you approve, short lessons you read when you can, and Continue, which puts you back on the exact page and spot where you stopped.

## You approve the plan

You start with a question, or with material you already have, such as a web link, a PDF, notes, Markdown or a photo. Learnfold proposes a course plan, and nothing is written until you approve it.

That approval step is where you steer first. Read the plan and check it's heading where you want. Suppose you asked how to read a company's balance sheet. You'd expect the plan to start with what the thing is for before it gets into ratios. If it jumps straight to advanced analysis, don't approve it. Start again with a question that says where you're starting from, like "starting from zero."

If you're working from a list of books or articles, our guide on [building a reading list into a plan](/guides/build-a-reading-list-into-a-plan/) covers how to get from a pile of sources to a course.

## Lessons are short and written as you go

After approval, lessons are written section by section, so you can start reading while the rest is still being written. Each lesson is a short page, with interactive pictures where a picture explains something better than a paragraph. A short page fits into a short gap in your day, which is the only kind of gap a lot of people have.

## You steer as you read

A self-paced course is more useful when the pace isn't the only thing you control.

At the end of every lesson, "Where next?" lets you choose the direction. **Go deeper** adds detail on something the page mentioned briefly. **Go sideways** opens a related or opposite idea. **Zoom out** shows the bigger picture. Or type your own question. Each choice writes a new page linked to the lesson it came from, in the background, and a small banner tells you when it's ready.

You can also select a passage and ask Why, How, or for an example, or type your own question about the whole page. Discussions are saved, so a question you asked on Tuesday is still there on Sunday.

If the branching appeals to you more than the plan does, [following a rabbit hole without losing the thread](/use-cases/follow-your-curiosity-rabbit-hole/) covers that side.

## Keep track of where you are

Self-paced learning falls apart when you can't remember where you were. Learnfold has a few tools for that.

- **Continue** drops you on the exact page and spot where you left off.
- **The course map** shows every page you opened, with a "You are here" marker.
- **Pin a goal** on the map, so the thing you set out to learn stays in view.
- **Open threads** are the questions you haven't finished.
- **Tie it together** combines those threads into one page.

Courses and progress can sync across your devices through iCloud, so a course you started on your iPhone can be waiting on your iPad.

## Check yourself when it suits you

Checks are optional. At the end of a page you can take multiple choice, write an answer, or do a guided discussion, and you get feedback on what you got right. A wrong answer can become a conversation. Practice pages help you revisit lessons after missed answers, which is handy when you've been away for a week.

## Make the course your own

Every lesson is an editable page. Fix a sentence, add your own example, or ask the AI to rewrite a section that didn't land. A course is made of pages, subpages and folders. After a few weeks of edits, the wording on most pages can be yours.

## Good to know

- **Check the numbers yourself.** Learnfold uses AI to write explanations, and AI makes mistakes. In a subject like finance, a wrong figure or a reversed formula has consequences, so check anything you'll act on against a reliable source. Our guide on [checking AI explanations for mistakes](/guides/check-ai-explanations-for-mistakes/) can help.
- **A gap in your subscription doesn't lock your reading.** Lessons you saved earlier can be read without a subscription. Writing new pages needs a plan. Learnfold Cloud, Learnfold's own AI service, comes with the Cloud and Studio plans, with daily usage limits, and Plus is for bringing your own provider. Plans are at [learnfold.app/#pricing](https://learnfold.app/#pricing).

## Who it is not for

If you need a teacher checking in on you, or deadlines that make you keep going, look elsewhere. If you want a fixed syllabus everyone else is also following, a traditional course fits better. Learnfold is for people who would rather set their own route and keep their own pace.

## Quick answers

**How do I make my own self-paced learning plan?**

Start from the question or material you care about. In Learnfold you type a question or add a source such as a web link or PDF, review the course plan it proposes, and approve it before anything is written.

**Can I stop a course and pick up where I left off?**

Yes. Continue drops you on the exact page and spot where you left off. Courses and progress can sync across your devices through iCloud.

**Can I change the course as I go?**

Yes. Every lesson ends with a choice to go deeper, go sideways, zoom out or ask your own question, and each choice writes a new linked page. You can also edit any page yourself or ask the AI to rewrite a section.

**Is there a certificate at the end of a Learnfold course?**

No. Learnfold is for understanding a subject on your own terms. It does not offer accredited credentials or certificates.
